Before the invention of plastic, people used clay pots or glass for the storage. The problem was that they were brittle and heavy. The first synthetic plastic was known as bakelite( used in telephones) which was invented by leo baekeland in 1907.
Many industries still depend on plastic because it is:
- Water resistant
- Shock resistant
- Inexpensive of production
- Light weight
- High Strength to weight ratio
The production of plastic is 322 million tonnes in 2015. An average Indian consumes 11 kgs of plastic. India produces 15000 kgs of plastic everyday, where 9000kgs is collected and 6000kgs is not collected.
Plastic pollution has created huge problem to the environment, it will decompose but it takes millions of years. They cause water pollution, land pollution, micro plastics in living organisms, etc.
It is an Indian startup(HQ Bangalore), it has come up with an idea of producing bio-degradable plastic. Started in 2012 with aim of swachh bharat( a mission by government of India to make India clean and green).
